Mutter Museum director Gretchen Worden passed away a couple days ago and her obituary is as interesting as the museum itself.

Having a bad day? Be glad you aren’t landing a 747 in crosswinds at Kai Tak airport in Hong Kong.
Where magneto-reluctance and capacitive directance modialy interact
I have no idea what it does, but I’m deathly afraid that my inverse reactive current supply cannot automatically synchronize cardinal grammeters. “It” in this case is Rockwell’s retro-encabulator which replaces old pre-fabulated amulite base-plate machines that had a malleable logarithmic casing. It’s also completely hyperbullshitic – the optimized version of the “all sizzle no steak” cliche.
iPod random play brilliance – Part I

Young Marble Giants – “Include Me Out”
Jerry Goldsmith – “You’re A Foolish Man Mr. Flint” (from the In Like Flint soundtrack)

Roy’s Cafe and Amboy
Tonight’s episode of Huell Howser’s California’s Gold television show was a rerun of his visit to windblown Mojave Desert town Amboy. Amboy has always just been barely hanging in there ever since I-40 bypassed that stretch of US-66, but Route 66 tourism and the occasional movie appearance guaranteed at least a little business over the years.
I first learned of Amboy in early 1984 after a couple of us drove all night around the southern Mojave and wandered into Roy’s Cafe around 6 in the morning and had breakfast served to us by a old gent who seemed to be as old as the desert itself. The food was, well, adequate, and the guy liked to spray Raid everywhere, but for the middle of absolute nowhere it was hella good and Roy’s decor hadn’t changed much (if at all) in fifty years. Buster Burris was the gentleman in question and had lived in Amboy since moving there in the 1930s. The Howser show interviewed Buster, and I got to wondering if he was still alive and what Amboy’s status is.
Buster finally sold the town in 1995 and moved to Twentynine Palms where he eventually passed away in 2001. The new Amboy owners put the town up for sale in February of this year (asking price $1.8 million), but no news on a buyer yet.
1967 CDR 700 Go!
Finally finished up my 1967 entry to the CDR 700 Go! series. The object is to fill up a 700MB CD-R with mp3s of songs released in a given year. No other guidelines – some folks went with hits, some with obscurity, some with both. Here’s the 1973 comp I did earlier to give you an idea. There’s so much great stuff released in 1967 (I started with a 3.2GB pile of tracks), that a thoroughly complete collection could take up a couple CD-Rs, so right off I axed just about anything that’s common on classic rock radio. What happens on Aeroflot, stays on Aeroflot
Passing on Ghana Airways is easy, but I’ve been fascinated with Aeroflot for a long time. They’ve been upgrading their fleet and service is significantly better (even the food looks good), but there’s still some wildly abstract inconsistencies which I find rather appealing.
Replacing old Russian planes with modern western planes was easy. Replacing old staff attitudes with new customer-friendly ones is not so easy. Whereas too many staff at US airlines now seem to greet their customers with open hostility, the Aeroflot staff simply greet customers with complete neutral apathy – or perhaps, they just ignore them completely!
Aeroflot’s old Soviet-era logos are now apparently retro-cool. Just don’t anger the flight crew.
Fly the friendly skies of Ghana Airways: wing and prayer required
So yeah, flying on America West mostly sucks, but it could be much worse. Take Ghana Airways for example. Ghana Air hasn’t renewed its operating license to fly into US airspace. The US Department of Transportation has banned them from flying here anyway because of “serious questions surrounding the safety of its aircraft”. 200 Accra-bound passengers have been stranded in BWI limbo after one of Ghana Air’s two remaining DC-10s was grounded for safety reasons (leaving them with only one long-haul jet). Big surprise then than Ghana Airways’ passenger comments vary between angry and wrathful while industry watchers look on with disdain.
Meanwhile Ghana Airways has been rummaging through the Mojave Airport mothball fleet for replacement jets, but I suspect that the FAA takes a dim view of painting your airplane with (get this) paint rollers. However, Ghana Airways isn’t through looking for help just quite yet:
What does an airline do when it has only five planes, only one of them is still flying and that one, too, is grounded with a “Technical”? When for years it has been sitting on $160 million of debts thanks to ongoing mismanagement and corruption, its sole shareholder, the government, is reluctant to shell out any more money, and the fourth CEO since the beginning of 2001 cannot make any headway with the problems? When the company, bloated with 1,500 employees, many of them unproductive, has more drivers than vehicles and more secretaries than typewriters, let alone computers, and the payroll is only intermittently paid? They put their trust in God. At the beginning of June, the hopelessness among the workforce of Ghana Airways had reached such proportions that they flew an expatriate preacher back to the capital city, Accra, from London and joined with him in a three-hour prayer session, during which they beseeched the Almighty for help.
The Apple Product Cycle
“An obscure component manufacturer somewhere in the Pacific Rim announces a major order for some bleeding-edge piece of technology that could conceivably become part of an expensive, digital-lifestyle-enhancing nerd toy.” And as they say, hilarity ensues…
