Why does the screen move?
Doc Savage pulp covers
MetaFilter links to a complete collection of Doc Savage pulp magazine covers. The abstract ones from 1947 and 1948 are particularly groovy.
Utterly fantastic art
Scrubbles points to this terrific collection of fantastic art taken from Cornell’s collection of manuscripts, obscuro books, and turn of the century magazines.
Yesterday’s Tomorrows
Yesterday’s Tomorrows is a travelling exhibition of retrofuture ephemera. Lots of cool stuff on their web site.
Plants as architecture
Mind-blowing collection of plant photographs taken by Karl Blossfeldt, a German sculpture instructor who used his photographs of plant to educate his students about design in nature.
Amazing collection of Polish movie posters
Pretty amazing collection of movie poster art from Poland. Certainly better looking than the Hollywood equivalents and often better than the actual movie they’re advertising.
Don’t these new media guys read The Design Of Everyday Things?
Matt Jones points out a hilarity on the doors of the BBC’s New Media office (and like Matt, it’s a constant source of irritation for me)
Putting a “pull” handle on the push side of a door. Here seen with the classic “hastily-laserprinted-correctional-signage” in the BBC New Media reception area.
Astronaut Dinosaur
He is 65 million years old and was at one point the king of the Cretaceous period. Now he likes tacos and is traveling the world. Scott Listfield takes pictures of dinosaurs, and creates paintings about astronauts and dinosaurs. Astronautdinosaur.com is the domain name.
Crane Accidents
There are web sites for airplane accidents and car accidents, why shouldn’t there be one for industrial crane accidents too?
What strikes me as being odd is that it’s the “official site” for crane accidents.
