From: Mark P, youamwho@yahoo.com Subject: Ups And Downs Anthology/nc Date: 2/20/2002 6:56:11 AM To: seance@lists.no-fi.com This is one crackin' compendium! These guys had that Churchy sound down pretty damn righteously back in the mid eighties. >>Available only through this website, you can order the album here. A 2CD collection of Greg and Darren Atkinson's pre-Big Heavy Stuff material previously only available on vinyl or cassette or not at all. Compiled by Big Heavies drummer Nick Kennedy, here's what he had to say about it: "It started with a wish for "Sleepless" on the more covenient format and quickly escalated when Darren Atkinson lent me a whole heap of stuff he had lying around on cassette and vinyl. Basically it's a pretty comprehensive overview of the brothers Atkinson from 1979 through to 1990 (just before the Heavies formed) and contains all three commercially released 42nd Street recordings (pre-Ups), the 5 track "Darling It's Wonderful" cassette, the two Waterfont singles + the Waterfront compilation track, "Sleepless", b-sides to "Living Kind" and the two singles off "Watchful Eye", a few demos from around that time, the 5 track "Rash" CDEP, live-to-air triple J acoustic session (including a wonderful cover of Wire's "Outdoor Miner") and the last demos they did for the unrecorded 2nd Mushroom album. It's got about 45-50 tracks on it and comes with artwork and a few bodgy sleevenotes from moi. All tracks have been transferred from the sources we had available but have been cranked in volume and we used the cleanest vinyl copies we could find. No noise reduction was used to get rid of clicks and pops as we tried it and it flattened the sound-no obvious cracks appear anyway. "Sleepless" in particular sounds unreal but you won't be disappointed in the other stuff. There is a small dropout in the first 30 seconds of the first track on "Darling..." cassette but it's the only one we had." Nick Kennedy Tracklist: Disc One 1. radio promo 2. EVERYTHING and then some! You can still pick it up at the Big Heavy Stuff website @ 30 bucks AUS(it's purported as being a 50 2 CDR set run) but Jonathan S pointed out that Red Eye is selling it at double that amount! http://www.bigheavystuff.net/discography/upsanddowns.html BTW -- that "Woahhhh" quote down there is Jonathan. ;-) Mark From the Red Eye site via Jonathan Sargeant -- >>Ups and Downs Anthology LIMITED EDITION OF 50 WEBSITE ONLY 2CD/46 TRACK RELEASE FROM 2001 includes the classic "Sleepless" mini LP, tracks from vinyl singles, demos and radio sessions and pre U&D's outfit 42nd Street.
