At first the Beatles were energetic take-them-by-storm pop, then they were a tripped out band experimenting with wierd stuff that some of the early fans hated. Same with the Chuch; they aren't doing the same thing they did 20 years ago and not everyone relates to what they do now. Like the Beatles they have moved on. Comparing AENT to Blurred Crusade is like apples and oranges. But I think it's perfectly justified to say that it is every bit as good. >> My view is very similar to Daniel's. To be precise, since I don't see much of any value in very early Beatles myself, in using the same analogy I'd compare BC to mid-period Beatles (when they were still clearly a pop band but starting to acquire some serious substance) and the later stuff to later Beatles (when they much more substantial but also getting thoroughly weird). It's a matter of personal preference - if you really go for a certain sound or are a real pop fan you might go for BC above all else, but if you like things a bit out-there you might find BC a bit poppy (certainly my first impression of it). I don't really think a band could keep sounding Beatlesy/Byrdsy for a whole 20 years without becoming pretty stale.
