I went to their concert here in Cambridge (which was the last of their UK tour, I think), and was so impressed! I have followed them closely in the 80's, but haven't heard any of their new stuff before the concert. I must say that the new stuff is excellent, some of it even better than the old stuff. But - first to the concert. Monday, a week ago, the junction, Cambridge. A combination of the old and new stuff. Many old songs, with highlights being "the cutter", "the killing moon" and "my kingdom". The band sounded very good, and the new members that accompany Ian and Will fit well into the puzzle. Still, it's clear who is dominant... A few days after I went and bought their last two CDs. "Flowers" from last year was such a lovely surprise. This is an album of lively and well-structured songs, with lots of driving guitars and beautiful melodies. It is much more optimistic and upbeat than I imagined, and the first five songs are simply perfect. A must have. I could well imagine this album played by the church - listen and you'll understand why. I also bought their newly released "live in Liverpool" CD, which was recorded in the same tour that I went to (and the setlist is indeed very similar). This is a very good starting point to know the band. A good collection of old and new songs, which are performed in a very good way. I was very glad to find "all my colours" on this CD (one of my favourite E&TB songs). And - just to recommend - I think that the best album they released in the 80's is ocean rain. (By the way - they think so as well. I came across an interview with Ian McCulloch in which he stated it). Heaven up here is good as well, but it contains some weak songs. Ocean rain doesn't have weak points. Just my opinion...
