From: purple pagoda, purplepagoda@hotmail.com Subject: Picking Up Some Old Threads - All Church Date: 2/13/2002 10:12:20 AM To: seance@lists.no-fi.com Finally got a free moment to comment on some past threads - Someone had wondered whether it's better to see the Church on the opening night of a tour or a closing night. I've had the good fortune to see both. What I witnessed on the closing night (GAF tour 1990) was how incredibly tight they were after three months on the road combined with the excitement of going home the next day. Marty smashed the front off his Rickenbacker by grinding the horn into the stage trying to wrench even more feedback for his solo on 'Russian Autumn Heart'. On an opening night (HOB tour 1998) you get the feel of them working without a safety net. Nervous energy from being back on stage - in this case this was the first full electric show in the USA since '90 - as well as the trepidation and insecurity of how new, unheard material will be received days before it even hits the stores. In this case they need not have worried. The Belly-Up tavern was oversold and the crowd was rabid. 'Louisiana' and 'Buffalo' were well received and the band brought the roof down with 'Hotel Womb', 'Day Of The Dead' and 'Tantalized'. Marty soared and roared all night but it was Peter who had the last word with 'You Took', the final song of the evening. AENT Production: Yes it is a little muddled but it is better to have our ears and perceptions challenged, otherwise we would probably be posting our opinions on a Whitesnake fan site (deep violent shudder). I have friends that, for this reason, don't want to know about anything after 1978 and still get geeked when 'La Grange' comes on the radio. I applaud the band for staying true to their vision and the job Tim did. Don't be surprised if 10-15 years from now your kid's favorite band hits it big and cites HOB and AENT for being influential on their sound.
