From: Oardodo@aol.com Subject: opinion PART II Date: 2/10/2002 8:43:31 PM To: seance@lists.no-fi.com Here's my TRACK by TRACK followup to my general AENT review (opinions): NUMBERS: Still great, but when listening to AENT the first few times, I wished I had not heard it off the singles package. A lurky, mischievous tune in typical Church style. Feel the ending is too cluttered. I think the soft mix fits the "feel" of the album better. AFTER EVERYTHING: Can't say much more than what everyone else already has! Very emotional vocals and all the great sonic effects you except. Some tunes you know are more special when you hear them and this is THE ONE. Maybe the most beautiful tune since Tranquility and as good as Paradox. The lyrics point to the main theme of the album I think: life reflection. THE AWFUL ACHE: A well written SONG. The Chorus fits so well with the verse. At first ,the intro and middle break really bothered me. Anybody think the"tone" of the intro sounds like "The Porpoise Song" 's tone.( Would describe this better if I knew more about equipment jargon). The lyrics give me the impression all the characters are dead . Sad spectres crossing paths? SONG FOR THE ASKING: Hated it for the first few listens. Now I find it very infectious and even like the "yeah, yeah, yeah," thang. The tinkering piano and reverb? guitar effect make me think of skimming across water and the spoken first line (I am a sailor...) The lyrics bother me. Very cynical. Does anybody get the idea Kilbey is writing about a bad situation with a fan or maybe a comment on fans in general? CHROMIUM: Not too impressed upon first listen. Has grown on me especially the soaring vocals (Suffocateee!). This does rock. I think they did a good job on the production to make it not disrupt the overall flow of AENT, but at certain points, Marty's voice sounds veiled in the mix. PARADISE: Not too impressed upon first listen. I STILL not impressed with the lyrics. As somebody else said, what is being added to the Fatima vision story or is there a viewpoint presented here? Then again, maybe there isn't one.Musically, its growing on me especially the chorus, but I still think it is too typical Church. REPRIEVE: Again, did not get it on first listen. The shifts within the song were too disjointed. Now, I love it! The basslines alone make the whole damn thing worthwhile. This song breaks into a really fun rocking "jam" and psychedlic vibe at the end. Great guitar. This tune reminds me of the REFO album and maybe it was composed of left over ideas from those sessions? Similar feel to "All See It Now" and "Get Over It". NIGHT FRIENDS: Beautiful song! Crisp guitar and piano and echoy background vocals actually make me think of COLDNESS. SEEN IT COMING: A guily pleasure. Probably too poppy for some fans, but I never had a problem with that aspect of the Church. The lyrics are very uplifting to me. The chorus though gets driven into the ground by the end of the song. Would like to hear the alternative version one day. INVISIBLE: On first listen, I found myself so distracted by the guitar scratching that I completely lost the lyrics and everything else. Very minimal beat so the lyrics take centerstage, kindof like MATS. Certainly has the same trance-like dimension. I think it would be too long if there wasn't some chorus. UNDO and OXYDENTAL: I now see why these were NOT put on AENT. Just miss the feel of the CD. I like both however. UNDO is a tad too cluttered and unneccesarily long. I LOVE the lyrics to OXYDENTAL, but especially the bass effect and jazzy feel. d.o.(oardodo)
