My experience in owning several Epis is that they tend to be great quality for the money. My last Epi Les Paul standard was far better in durability and sound than my mint 69 Gibson ES335 or my '79 Gibson Les Paul. The pickups on both of those were crap, the tuners were sorry - but the reason I bought them was for the excellent resale, huge profits. The Epis (the more expensive ones, not the 'dot' type) actually use the exact same tuners and accesory parts as the Gibsons. The only thing you have to be careful about on the Epi's are the pickups - they can be really great or total crap (just like the Gibsons), but the good Epis are even double wax dipped to get rid of microphonic squeal. The only difference in the pickups of a Gibson and the pickups of an EPI is the country the coils are wrapped in. The cheaper labor overseas is sometimes reflected in the quality of the winding. That said, my $300 American made Gibson '57 humbuckers that I recently purchased squeal horribly due to loose winding and a poor job of wax-dipping the pickups to get rid of the air pockets. In contrast, my Epi LP never squealed once, even running loud amps and high distortion during live shows. It's a toss up, I think the Gibsons are usually better workmanship, but a brand name never guarantees much except a higher price... The Epi Korina SG is $300-$500. The Gibson is $2400. No contest for someone on my budget!! dw __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Send FREE Valentine eCards with Yahoo! Greetings! http://greetings.yahoo.com
