From: Crusader, divinedjinn@yahoo.com Subject: guitar types and stuff (NC) Date: 2/9/2002 2:14:38 PM To: Seance List, seance@lists.no-fi.com Hello everyone (and Daniel), I noticed the post about the Epi. I haven't had any run ins with that particular model, but I don't like Epis very much in the main...the hardware generally is subpar (even for an inexpensive guitar). I also hate Fender Squires for similar reasons (another story for another time). I found that with the epis I've worked with in comparisson to other brands who offer inexpensive similar models that they just dont rate. An example of this is Epi Dot (Gibson 335 knockoff), compared to the DeArmond Starfire, it is shit. The Epi hardware fails in months often (un-biased gear reviews often speak of this too), and the switches and tuners are horrible. In regards to SGs...not much of an SG man here, I like hollowbodies and semi-hollowbodies (preferably Gibson or Guild). I also love Stratocasters and Telecasters and fell in love with Thinlines more recently. Something I have found is if you are just planning to buy a Epi model and strip the parts and install Gibson parts or the like (and you are not a tech, therefor will probably hire one) then I would just go with the Gibson model...I tried this once. It was gonna run me so much $ for all the parts (nuts, tuning pegs, switches, pickups, knobs) + the time and work fees. What is a $500 US guitar would run up another $600 US or so and most wholesale outlets carry a lot of popular Gibson products for $1,200 - $1,500 US that Epiphone usually knocks off. ***Inexpensive models I strongly recommend: -Ibanez GSA60BK - strat body, SSH setup, no pickguard, no real special features (and not the warmest of all guitars)...but it runs for $200 US and is solid as hell. Comes in blue or black. -DeArmond X155 - Great full hollowbody archtop jazz guitar, rich warm tone, nice acoustic sound unplugged, two humbuckers, runs for around $600 US, lists at $999 US. Comes in sunburst or natural. -Any Fender Strat or Tele Standard or Classic. Standards run around $400 US (w/ humbucker), listing at $600. Classics run around $600 US, and list around $900 US. I love Classic thinlines ('69 or '72)!!!! ***However if you are going expensive: -Fender American model Strats or Teles. -Gibson Les Pauls or 335s. -Rickenbacker 360 (6 or 12) -Jackson Soloists ...Pedals, Amps, Basses, and Keyboards are another story, anyhow, enough of me rambling. Take care and enjoy the guitar Daniel. -Regards, Blurry Crusader __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Send FREE Valentine eCards with Yahoo!
