" More than 20 years after rising up from down under with the haunting pop single " The Unguarded Moment " the Church is still gliding at a hushed warp speed through the darker reaches of musical inner space. The Australian - born quartet's latest explorations are chronicled on " After Everything, Now This " and if the atmospheric, brooding, guitar driven sound is familiar, it certainly shows no signs of wear. Sublimely unconcerned with airwave trends, the founding crew of bassist-vocalist Steven Kilbey and guitarists Marty Willson-Piper and Peter Koppes sticks to the course first charted in 1980, yet still manages to discover new soundscapes. Songs such as the sweeping " Numbers " and the majestically echoing chords of " The Awful Ache ", colored with strings both real and synthetic, provide a timelessly beautiful framework for Kilbeys' sometimes sullen, sometimes yearning, always engaging ruminations. Long may the Church continue to run deep in the lush lowlands of their neo-psychedelic muse. Somehow their grandiose sadness is downright uplifting. Gene Triplett - The Oklahoman
