Date: 2/8/2002 10:56:20 AM To: seance@lists.no-fi.com Just my two penny worth; I can see how it has got some bad reviews because the first two times I listened to it, it made very little impression. The first time was late at night after seeing Brian Wilson at the RFH (wonderful) and I was half-listening half-reading. The whole thing passed me by, to be frank, it seemed very one paced and a bit dull, second time was loud in the car whilst coming around the M25, similar experience, nothing stood out. After that though, it really began to grow on me and insinuate its way into my brain, now it's getting better and better with every listen. I like the production, it's very warm, and the one-pacedness of it is actually it's strength; as it all hangs together really well and the sum is perhaps greater than it's parts. It really reminds me of Lucinda Williams 'Essence' which was my favourite record of last year. That can also seem dull on first listen and got some pretty lukewarm reviews initially, but subsequent listens bring out all the little nuances. It ended up in a lot of end-of year polls. It also has that one slow tempo throughout. Curiously my experience has been the total opposite of HOB which I loved on first listen but rapidly got bored with. Church-wise AENT most reminds me of MATS (well the reissued "MATS plus" anyway) Tomorrow I plan to give it a listen at my mate's place with a bit of spliffage and should be awesome...............
