From: Craig Smith, mannyandjess@hotmail.com Subject: Nup, no Church here - Big Heavy Stuff and Big Star Date: 8/10/2001 3:27:25 AM To: seance@lists.no-fi.com Probably only writing this email for one person here, but hey.... Another brief history of Australian pop.... Big Heavy Stuff were a fave back in....1992/93 - Their first ep 'Pops like Crazy' was cute pop music with the lead track being a cover of the Carpenters 'Superstar'. Carolyn Polley (singer) was a fit little pumpkin and the video clip just played on that constantly. The second ep (name escapes me, Chaos?) was another classic. Great song on it called 'Fiendish Plot of Mao'. Went off them after that for some reason. They put out an album called 'truck' which nobody trucked with and then they ditched the pop for whatever shtick they've been soldiering on with since then. I've known the drummer for a while now and he's played in more bands than I care to mention - he used to be in a cute three piece pop combo called the Templebears - actually Big Heavy Stuff circa now has 2/3 of that band. Really not my thing anymore but they're the kind of band you wish well just out of their sheer determination to keep putting out records. Saw Big Star last night. Definitely GIG OF THE YEAR contender, if not outright winner. Golden showering from a great height on the other contenders so far - the Strokes, Television, Belle and Sebastian, Red House Painters etc. You got what you were hoping and so much more. Two new songs and covers of the Beach Boys 'Wouldn't it be Nice' and an after curfew jam of that disco song...'do a little dance, make a little love, get down tonight'. Token Church content - is it me or is the spanish guitar solo by Pete on 'Almost With You' reminiscent of Cockney Rebels '(Come up and See Me) Make Me Smile?
